    • Thanks, EllaDee. St Joe’s Feast Day, though commemorated, isn’t really celebrated in our part of Italy, at least not like in Sicily. Same at my family home. Still, I’ve never been one to let a good reason to party to go to waste. Glad you enjoyed the post. The daffs are from my front garden last year. They are weeks away from blooming this year.

    The Feast with the Bread Altar I photographed last year is going to be on Sunday the 25th so I’ll miss it. They have a mass right at the restaurant first. Have to run to school.

    • Thanks, Ruth. I had a special pasta planned but I’ve got a fridge full of leftovers that need to be dealt with. THe pasta can wait another day or two. That bread last year was something else! Even Zia was amazed when I showed her you post. Too bad you’ll miss it. Next year’s will be all the more special.

    • And a happy St Josephs Day to you, too, Maria! Our flowers will be late this year. In fact, tomorrow’s high will be lucky to reach 25˚. Even so, it won’t be that long. It’s not like this is Thanksgiving weekend. 🙂

Right now, if I closed my eyes while I am sitting in my office, sipping on a double espresso (no sugar, no milk) I am instantly transported to a small café in Italy, fronting onto a square with a wonderful fountain, early morning, springtime (just cool enough that you need a light sweater to sit outside).
    And then I open my eyes and it’s grey, cold, snowy and the stupid pigeons are cooing on the Juliette balcony.

John, in this part of the world Sicilian immigrant communities celebrate St. Joseph’s Day with feasts, serving a homemade fresh pasta dish with fava beans, lentils, cauliflower and fennel. When a new guest arrives someone calls out: “Como siamo tutti mute?!” and everyone else answers, “Viva, Jesus, Maria Giu-seeeeep-PI!” Ken

        • Thanks for the clarification, Ken. I’d no idea. We’re not Siciliani and, as a transplant to this area, I haven’t the Italian roots I may have had if I were born here. I’m familiar with the feasts, breads, and zeppole but not much else. Then again, Chicago celebrates St. Pat’s, while St Joe is pretty much ignored, except in the area’s Little Italy’s. Although we’ve a sizable Italian community here, we’ve far more Polish and Irish.
          Again, thank you. Im going to “spring” this on Zia when I speak with her later today. 🙂

    • Hope you had a good day, too! Here’s a brief St. Joe summary, keeping in mind I’m no cleric…

      The Feast commemorates St Joseph, the earthly father of Christ. In the Middle Ages, or so the legend says, Sicily was gripped by a severe drought. The crops and livestock withered and died and the people were starving. They prayed to St Joseph to intercede on their behalf, promising to forever celebrate his feast day in return. Their prayers were answered and to this day, his Feast Day is celebrated throughout Sicily and wherever Sicilians have emigrated. Hope this helps. 🙂

You try to explain to someone wanting to speak with you seriously that you have not fallen afoul of a ‘crazy bug’!
