Nothing special for dinner but I am planning to make a pot of sauce today. I’m completely out. Horror of horror!
Chicago public schools will be in session to make up for days lost during the strike and it may not be celebrated again. The Mayor is instituting a longer school year. Columbus and Pulaski days will no longer by celebrated. Much to the chagrin of the Italians and Poles, St Patrick’s Day will continue to be celebrated. Uh, oh!
I don’t know what happens on Columbus Day in Chicago, but in Providence, it’s the Italian-American version of St Patrick’s Day – have a parade, drink all day, throw up, drink some more….
And the Natives beat drums (and their breasts) and complain…

There’s a parade, Marie, but I don’t know of any problems like those associated with St. Pat’s. Maybe down in Little Italy but certainly not in every tavern like with our Irish brothers. And there have been Native American demonstrations, too.
I saw a piece on a news program yesterday. A growing number of states are no longer celebrating the holiday. We need a good Paesan’ in the White House to reverse this trend!
Seems to be a recent development around here, probably born from an unholy union of three-day weekend, parade, Oktoberfest(s) and the New England tradition of Any Excuse for a Party… 🙂

Thanks, Charlie. Columbus Day is a federal holiday commemorating the discovery of America by Columbus. Considering that it’s now believed that Ericson discovered this land centuries before, that Columbus never really set foot on America, and thousands upon thousands of Native Americans died as a result of this first contact, the holiday is losing favor. Fewer states are celebrating it. Who knows how long it will remain an official holiday here?
It’s been chilly here, too, Eva. Tomorrow is supposed to be warmer but another cold front will come through tomorrow night to stop that! It looks like Old Man Winter is just itchin’ to get here and set up house. I hope you and JT have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your friends and a safe trip home.
Hello John Happy Columbus Day!! I am soooo happy that you are cooking “sauce” today so am I…the reason I put sauce in paraphrases is because in South Jersey everyone calls red sauce “gravy” . I am a transplant here from the northern part of the State and up north/NYC it is called sauce, not gravy, gravy is brown…enjoy your day…

I can remember when we did have a Columbus Day holiday from school, but it’s no longer observed in California anyway. I think it’s just that there are too many holidays. My son-in-law who works for Los Angeles County has the holiday, but Sophia has school. It’s a mixed bag! But I’m old school and remember, so I’ll make my own celebration today. It seems that our Columbus Day correlates with the Canadian Thanksgiving! I hope both can involve a good meal! 🙂

Hello, Debra. I hope you had a great holiday! Our public schools will probably be in session on Columbus Day from now on. Our mayor is extending the school year. Yesterday, I heard someone suggest replacing Columbus Day with an Explorers’ Day, honoring everyone from Ericson to Armstrong.
We Italians will just have to focus our energies on National Pasta Day, October 17th of every year. Who could possibly complain about a day dedicated to eating pasta? Imagine the parades! The floats! The giant balloons! And the food. All that glorious pasta! You can take away my Columbus but you cannot take away my pasta!
Californian? Are you not living in NYC now? You’re a Yankee, pure and simple. And NYC is where the first Columbus Day parade was held. When in New York, do as the Yankees do. I expect to see pics of you in the Columbus Day Parade next year. Heck! I’d drive to NYC to see that! 🙂

Hi, Marina. Columbus Day is a funny holiday. Once, all states observed it but now fewer and fewer do. Our public schools were closed but that will be stopped soon in an effort to lengthen the school year. Calling the library is as good a way as any to “keep up” and I’ll have to remember that. 🙂

For us October 12 is the National day but is also Pilar’s day, because is the feast day of Our Lady of the Pillar, so the whole discovery of the new world theme is overshadowed by her 😉

That’s exactly right, Giovanna. Congress over the years has moved a number of holidays to Mondays. It is much easier on business to remain closed for 3 days than to open for, say Mon & Tues, close on Wed, and then re-open for the remaining 2 days. This is especially true for the banking and financial industries. 🙂
